Central Valley places third at big meet

Bryson Beard (120 pounds), Blake Beard (138) and Colton Orrino (145) won titles Saturday to lead Central Valley’s wrestling team to third place at the 32-team Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic at Sentinel High in Missoula.

Orrino was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestling. The Bears had five other wrestlers finish in the top eight on the way to 176 1/2 points. Great Falls, Mont., (249 1/2) ran away with the tournament, followed by Havre, Mont. (185).

University placed fourth with 169 points, led by champions John Fairbanks (160) and Tate Orndorff (285). Cameron Sorensen (126) and Austin Stannard (170) placed runner-up for the Titans.

Matt Petrini placed third at 113 to lead Mead (119 1/2) to ninth place.

Coeur d’Alene (112) placed 10th, guided by champion Hudson Staub at 182. The Vikings’ Matt James lost to Orndorff in the final at 285.

Clarkston’s Dylan Beeler won the title at 220.

College wrestling

Stevan Knoblauch (125) and Cary Palmer (133) recorded pins and Clackamas CC (9-3) added two technical falls during a 27-14 win over North Idaho (8-3) at Oregon City, Ore.

Jeremy Golding (149) and Taylor Kornoely (285) had major decisions for the Cardinals.

College track and field

Washington State’s Briauna Watley and Terrance Chambers set meet records in the 200-meter dash during the 12th WSU Open indoor meet.

Watley finished in 25.19 seconds, breaking the mark of 25.39 set by WSU’s Nicole Hatcher in 2004. Chambers ran 22.27 to edge the 2007 time of 22.28 set by Idaho’s Sam Michener.

• Willie Milam broke Gonzaga’s record for the men’s 3,000 by 13 seconds, running 8:07.79 at Washington’s Indoor Preview.

Junior hockey

Justin Bonanno scored with 24 seconds left in the second overtime to give the Spokane Braves (15-22-0-4) a 3-2 win over Princeton (13-23-0-3) in KIJHL play at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
