In brief: Thieves remove major parts of ‘Kate’ bronze statue in CdA

Pieces of a life-size bronze statue were stolen from Riverstone Park in Coeur d’Alene Friday night or Saturday morning, and the Coeur d’Alene Police Department is investigating the theft.

The statue, titled “Kate,” features a 1920s-era woman on a bicycle with two dogs. The woman and the larger dog were removed in an effort that took tools, time and more than one person, a city news release said. The statue of the woman weighs several hundred pounds.

The crime is considered a felony since the artwork is valued at $25,000, though it would be worth less if sold for recycling. Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call the Coeur d’Alene police at (208) 769-2320.

MLK Jr. Day affects services

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday. Here is what’s open and closed for the holiday:

Government: City, county, federal and state offices and libraries are closed.

Schools: Schools are closed.

Trash: Most garbage service will maintain normal schedules, but check your service provider. Waste Management, the city of Spokane, and all Kootenai County city and rural garbage pickup are not affected by the holiday.

Mail: The U.S. Postal Service does not deliver mail.

Banks: Most banks are closed.

Parking meters: Spokane parking meters don’t have to be plugged.

Liquor stores: Idaho state liquor stores are open.

Legislature: Both the Washington and Idaho legislatures are in session.

Man held after chase, crash

Spokane police on Saturday arrested a man suspected of stealing a car and crashing it in west Spokane.

Police received a report about 7 a.m. that a man had assaulted another man and stolen his Toyota Rav-4. Officer Robert Collins spotted a vehicle matching that description near Sunset Boulevard and Rustle Road about 11 a.m., according to a police news release.

The driver of the Rav-4 sped up, lost control of the SUV and crashed into a utility pole near South Lindeke Street and West 13th Avenue, police said. When the man fled on foot, police dog Rav was brought in to track him. The fleeing man jumped into Latah Creek near High Bridge Park and was arrested shortly afterward, police said.

Dustin A. Spears, 28, was arrested on suspicion of eluding police, possession of stolen property and on a Department of Corrections warrant. More charges are anticipated in the case.
