Jets retain top coordinators

The New York Jets have retained several members of coach Rex Ryan’s staff, including offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman.

Ryan keeps most of his staff intact, with assistant head coach/running backs coach Anthony Lynn, defensive line coach Karl Dunbar, offensive line coach Mike Devlin and wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal all back after facing expiring contracts.

The team announced Saturday that Bobby April III was promoted to linebackers coach after serving as quality control-defense last season. He replaces Brian VanGorder, who left to become the defensive coordinator at Notre Dame.

Titans hire Spanos for linebackers

The Tennessee Titans have hired UCLA defensive coordinator Lou Spanos as Ken Whisenhunt’s new linebackers coach.

Spanos has worked in the NFL for 17 of his 19 years as a coach including 15 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also spent two seasons coaching linebackers for the Redskins.

Whisenhunt says they are lucky to have Spanos working with the linebackers because Spanos showed he is a good teacher and leader at UCLA and also helped with some of the NFL’s best defenses in Pittsburgh with Dick LeBeau. During Spanos’ time in Pittsburgh, the Steelers ranked in the top 10 for total yards allowed 13 times.
