Portland shuts out Chiefs 5-0

Brendan Leipsic scored two goals as the Portland Winterhawks defeated the Spokane Chiefs 5-0 on Sunday.

The Winterhawks fired 18 shots at Spokane goalie Garret Hughson in the first period but only one by Leipsic found the net at 19:19.

However, Portland scored three times in the second period on goals by Chase De Leo, Keegan Iverson and Leipsic. Oliver Bjorkstrand added a final goal in the third period.

Portland attempted 40 shots on goal with Hughson stopping 35.

Winterhawks goalie Brendan Burke made 25 saves.

This was the second time the Chiefs have been blanked, both shutouts coming in the last four games in which they have scored only four goals. Spokane was blanked by Seattle 1-0 on Tuesday.

Despite the loss, the Chiefs (27-15-2-2, 58 points) remain in third place in the U.S. Division, seven points back of first-place Portland (30-12-2-3, 65) and three back of the second-place Seattle Thunderbirds.

The Chiefs return for a two-game homestand, beginning with a game against Moose Jaw on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
