Sandpoint winery wins silver

Small House Winery, founded in 2009, released its first vintage in November.

And that Red Blend, which sells for $20, won a silver medal in the recent San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

Patrick Werry, a real estate agent, and Jon Harding, a retail and rental manager at Schweitzer Mountain Resort, started the winery without quitting their day jobs. Although there are no plans for a tasting room at this time, the Sandpoint winery is working on regional distribution and increasing production. A sangiovese, malbec and chardonnay are coming in the next several months.

Meantime, wine is available through www.smallhouse winery.com, Chimney Rock Grill and Gourmandie wine shop at Schweitzer, Coldwater Creek Wine Bar and Bricks & Barley.

Two other local wineries scored bronze at the same competition.

Nodland Cellars won for its 2009 Private Blend, which sells for $28.

Barrister Winery won for its 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, which sells for $35, as well as its 2011 Merlot, which sells for $29.
