Education Notebook: Mt. Spokane dance team wins big at competition
The Mt. Spokane High School Dance Team earned first place in the Hip-Hop division and third place in the Drill division at the Dance the Plank competition at Rogers High School on Jan. 18.
The Mt. Spokane dancers are Chloe Smith, Jennifer Havens, Mikayla Stoker, Emily Simpson, Carley Hancock, Delaney Breazeale, Lauren Schmitt, Eden Davis, Makenna Bergeson, Andrea Smith, Lauren Udlock, Tatum Holestine, Olivia Prater, Whitney Demarest, Meagan Rydholm, Shaylah Hancock, Corri Budge and Hannah Smith.
Salk Middle School hosting dinner, auction
Local residents are invited to the 19th annual Salk Middle School Spaghetti Feed and Silent Auction on Monday in the school’s cafeteria, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Dinner will be served at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. and the silent auction will be held until 8:30. Proceeds will benefit Salk’s band and choir programs.
Cost is $5 for adults, $4 for ages 5-12, and $20 per family. Children age 4 and younger are free.

LCHS senior wins composition competition
Lewis and Clark High School senior Gabriel Soileau was recently awarded top honors in the Music Teachers National Association Senior Composition Competition.
Soileau plays the piano, bass and accordion. Under the guidance of piano teacher Barbara Miller, Soileau has been active in local and national instrumental and composition competitions. This is the third time he’s won national awards for his work. Soileau has also organized the Vagabonds Balkan Brass Band.
Soileau will receive $2,000 and his composition will be performed in the conference winners’ recital on March 24 at the 2014 MTNA National Conference in Chicago.

Sophomore works as page for Sen. Padden
Elijah Hemingway, a home-schooled sophomore in Spokane, worked as a page for Sen. Mike Padden, R-Spokane Valley, in Olympia for a week this month.
Hemingway was one of 10 students, ages 14 to 16, who worked as pages during the second week of the 2014 session. They delivered mail, ran errands, learned parliamentary procedure and presented the flag. The students also had an opportunity to draft a bill and take part in a mock session.
In a press release from the Washington State Senate Majority Coalition Caucus, Padden said, “I met Elijah at a lunch for former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. He took an interest in politics, and I knew he would make a great addition to the page program. I am glad he decided to participate.”
Hemingway said of his time in Olympia, “This was a great experience. I really enjoyed getting to meet new people – the senators and representatives and other pages. I feel like I got a better understanding of government policy and the political process through the page program.”
