In brief: SFCC celebrating Chinese New Year

WEST SPOKANE – Spokane Falls Community College is celebrating Chinese New Year today in Sub Lounges A and B, Building 17, 3410 W. Fort George Wright Drive.

Visitors wearing red will receive a gift, and free Chinese food will be served to those who know their Chinese zodiac sign (help is on hand if needed).

A screening of “Kung-Fu Panda” is also part of the celebration which is sponsored by SFCC’s Chinese and Far East Clubs.

SCC to celebrate Chinese New Year

EAST SPOKANE – Spokane Community College’s Asian Pacific Club and the Spokane Chinese Association is hosting a Chinese New Year’s celebration on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. in the Lair Student Center, Building 6, 1810 N. Greene St.

Admission is free to the culture fair, featuring 15 exhibitors, and snacks from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Chinese New Year’s Show will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. It will feature dozens of performers and door prizes. Admission is $10; $6 for children age 5-12. Children 4 and younger are free.

Dance Center to offer free dancing

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Western Dance Center, 1901 N. Sullivan Road, will offer free nights of dancing Feb. 1 from 8 to 10 p.m. and Feb. 6 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Singles, couples and families are welcome, and there is a variety of dancing such as square dancing, round dancing and line dancing.

Ballet, tumbling classes offered

SPOKANE VALLEY – Spokane Valley’s Parks and Recreation Department is offering ballet and tumbling classes.

Pre-ballet will be offered Mondays from 4:15 to 5 p.m. for children ages 3 through 6. The classes will focus on introductory techniques and positions through games and songs. For children 7 and older, the ballet class will be Wednesdays from 4:15 to 5 p.m. and will focus on body awareness, strength, grace, poise and classic ballet techniques.

Classes are $45 and sessions run Feb. 10-March 3 and March 10-31.

Tumbling classes will be offered on Tuesdays. Children ages 1 ½ to 3 can take Baby Bugs for $35 per session, children from 3 through 5 can take Tumble Bugs for $40, and children ages 5 through 7 can take Jitter Bugs, also for $40.

All tumbling classes are designed to increase strength, flexibility, speed, balance and coordination. Each age group marks an increase in skills. Tumbling sessions will be held Tuesday through Feb. 25 and March 4-25.

All classes will be at CenterPlace Regional Event Center, 2426 N. Discovery Place.
