Hired According to reports out of Canada, Jamie Kompon will be introduced as the new general manager and head coach of the Portland Winterhawks. He will replace Mike Johnston, who was hired as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins after six seasons in charge of the Winterhawks. Kompon, 47, has been an assistant coach in the National Hockey League for 16 seasons.

Announced The ATP has announced that Turkey will host its first tour event, the Istanbul Open, in 2015. The clay-court tennis event will take place from April 27-May 3, a week before the Madrid Open.

Out USA Basketball says Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook will not participate this summer so he can rest up from some previous knee injuries.

Steve Stricker has withdrawn from the British Open next week at Royal Liverpool. It’s the second straight year he has decided not to play as he cuts back his schedule. Stricker last year began reducing his schedule to spend more time with his family.

Penalized NASCAR has penalized Kurt Busch and his Stewart-Haas Racing team for failing a postrace inspection at Daytona International Speedway. Crew chief Daniel Knost was fined $10,000 because the track bar on Busch’s Chevrolet exceeded the maximum separation. Busch finished third in Sunday’s rain-shortened and rescheduled race. Busch was also docked 10 driver points.

Resigned A blogger hired by the Washington Redskins to defend the team’s name has quit after two weeks. Ben Tribbett announced his resignation on Twitter, saying he didn’t want to be a distraction because of personal attacks directed toward him. Tribbett is well-known in Virginia politics as an advocate for liberal issues. He is perhaps best known for leading the attacks on Sen. George Allen for using the word “macaca” to describe an American of Indian descent during Allen’s ill-fated re-election campaign in 2006.
