13-year-olds arrested for joy ride

Two 13-year-old boys were arrested Tuesday after they reportedly stole a car from Spalding Auto Parts and took it for a joy ride, according to a Spokane Valley Police Department press release. One of the boys’ parents had called police at 9 p.m. to report that her son and his friend had been missing since 3 p.m. An officer responded and while he was talking to the mother the boys drove up in a Chevrolet Malibu with front end damage. The officer recognized the boys from previous contacts, the press release said. The boys reportedly said they found the car with the keys inside in a fenced area at Spalding’s. They admitted to driving the car through a closed gate and going for a joy ride, the press release said. Damage to the gate is estimated at $3,000. Both boys have been charged with second-degree burglary, theft of a motor vehicle and second-degree malicious mischief.
