Spokane teen drowns in Kootenai County

17-year-old was swimming in Black Bay, officials said

A 17-year-old from Spokane drowned Thursday night while swimming in the Black Bay area of the Spokane River in Post Falls, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities identified the drowning victim as Trey D. Daley on Friday morning.

Deputies responded to the Black Bay area shortly after 10 p.m., according to a news release. Several teens were reported to be swimming in the river when Daley called out he couldn’t swim anymore and went under the water without resurfacing, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Emergency personnel were able to pull Daley out of about 10 feet of water, but were not able to resuscitate him, according to the news release.

Daley was taken to Kootenai Medical Center, where he later died.
