Child OK after drowning scare

Fears that a child may have gone underwater Sunday afternoon at City Beach in Coeur d’Alene led to an emergency response at the crowded swim area.

Officials cleared the beach and were beginning to dive to look for a 12-year-old boy who had last been seen in Lake Coeur d’Alene. Then the boy was found, unharmed, nearby in City Park, police said.

Storms expected at fire site

ENTIAT, Wash. – A wildfire burning on about 34 square miles of grass, brush and timber in Central Washington did not grow on Saturday, but officials worried that storms forecast to arrive Sunday evening could cause explosive growth.

The Mills Canyon fire, burning near Entiat, was 25 percent contained Sunday, said spokesman Vladimir Steblina of the Pacific Northwest Incident Management Team.

Residents of several dozen homes have been told to evacuate. People living in another 500 homes have been warned to be prepared to leave.

The National Weather Service said thunderstorms with dry lightning were expected in the area around 8 p.m. Sunday.

About 781 firefighters assisted by eight helicopters were battling the fire Sunday.
