In brief: Lee-Anne Pace, Laura Diaz tied at Marathon Classic

Golf: South Africa’s Lee-Anne Pace, seeking a breakthrough win in the U.S., shot a 3-under-par 68 on Saturday to grab a share of the lead with Laura Diaz in the Marathon Classic in Sylvania, Ohio.

Pace, an eight-time winner on the Ladies European Tour, bounced back from bogeys at holes 11 and 12 to join Diaz at 11-under 202.

“It’ll mean quite a lot to be able to come out here and play well,” she said after recovering from the back-to-back bogeys with three late birdies. “It already has made my week. I was so tired in the beginning of the week and now this has happened, so I’m very excited.”

Diaz, the leader after each of the first two rounds, nearly holed her drive on the short par-4 ninth before settling for an eagle. But she left a 7-foot birdie putt short on the 18th to finish with a 71.

Rookie Jaye Marie Green shot a 63 for the day’s best round and was at 203 along with 2012 Marathon winner So Yeon Ryu, who had a 68.

Former University of Idaho golfer Kayla Mortellaro shot a 70 and is at 7-under 206.

• Roenick leads celebrity event: Former NHL star Jeremy Roenick shot a second-round 69 to take the lead after 36 holes and former LPGA great Annika Sorenstam and Chad Pfeifer, who lost his left leg above the knee serving in Iraq, are among several players in contention in the American Century Championship tournament in Stateline, Nevada.

Roenick has a two-day total of 48 points in the modified Stableford scoring system with Pfeifer in second at 44 and Spokane resident and former NFL quarterback Mark Rypien next at 43 at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. Sorenstam has 42 points and is tied for fourth place with 2011 champ Jack Wagner, the actor.

• Meth takes Amateur Public Links: Byron Meth beat Doug Ghim in the first playoff hole after blowing a three-hole lead down the stretch to win the U.S. Amateur Public Links championship in Newton, Kansas.

Meth, who plays for the University of Pacific, evened the match on the 36th hole of regulation at Sand Creek Station Golf course when 18-year-old Ghim, who is heading to the University of Texas, made double bogey.

• Jo wins women’s Public Links title: Fumie (Alice) Jo never trailed in her 3-and-2 victory over Eun Jeong Seong to win the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship in DuPont, Washington.

The 15-year-old Jo is the first USGA champion from China.

Wizards acquire Humphries

NBA: The Washington Wizards have acquired forward Kris Humphries from the Boston Celtics for a protected 2015 second-round draft pick.

Humphries appeared in 69 games, averaging 8.4 points and 5.9 rebounds, last season with Boston.

• Clippers re-sign Davis: The Los Angeles Clippers said that they have re-signed Glen “Big Baby” Davis.

Davis averaged 4.2 points and 3.0 rebounds in 23 games last season, when he joined the Clippers at the end of February.

Sporting KC sign Zusi, Besler

MLS: Sporting Kansas City has signed U.S. national team stars Graham Zusi and Matt Besler to long-term designated player contracts after both players generated interest from abroad following the World Cup.

Zusi, 27, appeared in all four games for the U.S. in Brazil, contributing assists in back-to-back games in the group stage against Ghana and Portugal. Besler, 27, also started all four matches for the U.S. at the World Cup.

Wozniacki faces Vinci in final

Tennis: Caroline Wozniacki will play Roberta Vinci of Italy for the Istanbul Cup title after they reached the final as seeded, 1 and 2, in Istanbul, Turkey.

Wozniacki beat Kristina Mladenovic of France 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals.

She will face Vinci, who beat teenage qualifier Ana Konjuh of Croatia 6-4, 6-2.

• Mayer will play Ferrer for title: Leonardo Mayer of Argentina will play top-seeded David Ferrer in the Hamburg Open final after they won straight-sets semifinals over local hopes in Hamburg, Germany.

Mayer upset seventh-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-5, 6-4, and Ferrer eased past 17-year-old Alexander Zverev 6-0, 6-1.

Somali Lemonade victorious

Horse racing: Somali Lemonade rallied down the middle of the track and held off a late run from Stephanie’s Kitten to win the $500,000 Diana by a neck at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Ridden by Luis Saez for trainer Michael Matz, the 5-year-old Lemon Drop Kid mare ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.51 over the inner turf course in capturing the first of 15 Grade 1 flat races during the six-week meeting.
