Obituary: Hulings, Rev. Clifford P.
HULINGS, Rev. Clifford P. (Age 89) Father Clifford P. Hulings, of Colbert died on July 23, 2014. Father Hulings was a sailor, a teacher, a priest and spiritual counselor to many people in the schools, hospitals, parishes and families he loved and served. He was born the ninth of ten children on July 30, 1924, to William and Elizabeth Hulings. He grew up in Daisytown, Pennsylvania, where he lived until he enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marines in July 1942. He served from 1942 to 1946 on ships carrying supplies to our troops and allies in North Africa, Sicily, France, England, Wales, and Russia. After the war he graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and then earned a B.S. degree in Education at California College. In 1954 he entered St. Anthony’s Seminary, Santa Barbara, California and in 1961 he was ordained as a Franciscan priest. During the 1960s Father Hulings served as a hospital chaplain and seminary teacher for the Franciscan Friars in California and Oregon. As a Franciscan priest he served in Phoenix, Seattle, and St Francis of Assisi in Spokane. In 1973 he joined the diocese and served at St. John Vianney. From 1975 to 1979 he was pastor at Sacred Heart, Brewster; St. Genevieve, Twisp; St. Anne, Bridgeport, and St. Mary, Mansfield. He was pastor at St. Gall, Colton and St. Boniface, Uniontown from 1979 to 1987. He retired in 1994 after serving as pastor at Our Lady of Fatima, Spokane for seven years. Father Hulings is survived by his friend, Janet Gorman of Colbert; his sister, Margaret Scherer of Centerville, Pennsylvania; 42 nephews and nieces, and many great-nephews and nieces. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 26, at 10:00am at St Francis of Assisi Church, 4420 N. Jefferson, Spokane, WA, immediately followed by burial at St. Gall cemetery in Colton. There will be a reception in Colton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Catholic Charities.
