Apple Cup Crisp ice cream favorite in national contest

Apple Cup Crisp ice cream is a real winner.

The frozen flavor from Washington State University recently won a national ice cream contest. It’s been named grand champion of the 2014 Progressive Dairyman magazine’s Flavor Faceoff.

Apple Cup Crisp topped 12 university-made ice cream flavors, beating out the second-place winner – Cornell University’s Bavarian Raspberry Fudge – by about 160 votes in the final round.

Apple Cup Crisp is made with vanilla ice cream spiked with crispy chunks of oatmeal cookies, green apple and spiced apple flavorings, and caramel swirls.

Its namesake is the annual Apple Cup football game between the WSU Cougars and the University of Washington Huskies.

The WSU Creamery and Ferdinand’s Ice Cream Shoppe, the gourmet ice cream shop on campus, will be featured in the Sept. 12 issue of Progressive Dairyman magazine.
