Weekend weather: Heat relief a week away

This heat is expected to stick around throughout the weekend in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene, so stay hydrated and, if possible, stay near a cool body of water or inside with the air conditioning.

Today will be the warmest with the high temperature expected to reach 98 in Spokane. As the weekend progresses, temperatures will drop each day. By Sunday, Spokane could be a cool 90, according to the National Weather Service. The forecast for Coeur d’Alene follows the same trend, with the hottest weather today at 93 and 89 by Sunday.

Sunny skies are expected throughout the weekend with one exception – clouds and a slight chance of thunder showers overnight Saturday into Sunday, said Paul Bof, a weather service meteorologist. The storm will be slow moving, but nowhere near as destructive as the system that moved through last week.

Humidity will be as low as 10 to 15 percent during the next four days and fire danger is high, so the lightening that could come with the storm is concerning, Bof said.

Heat relief is on the way, Bof said. Next Wednesday is forecast to drop into the mid-80s.

If you are planning on spending time in the great outdoors, be advised The Department of Natural Resources on Wednesday upgraded the fire danger to very high in Spokane, Okanogan and northern Lincoln counties. This ranking means fires can start easily from all causes and will quickly spread if ignited.

A burn ban on DNR land remains in effect for the area through Sept. 30, though stove burning is allowed.

The public is urged to check with campground officials to see if campfires are banned where they are staying.
