Attic blaze on North Magnolia Street injures firefighters

Two firefighters were injured fighting a stubborn attic fire that destroyed a home at 212 N. Magnolia St. on Saturday morning.

The first crew on the scene just before 11 a.m. reported heavy, black smoke coming from the eves on all sides of the house, Spokane Fire Department Battalion Chief Bob Green said in a news release. Flames engulfed the entire attic. The fire took about two hours to put out and firefighters struggled with the warm temperatures, Green said. Crews cycled in and out of firefighting efforts and a total of 50 firefighters responded to the scene.

Nearly the entire roof burned or was cut away by firefighters, Green said. Damage is estimated at $80,000.

The injured firefighters were treated at a local hospital and released, Assistant Chief Brian Schaeffer said. No information about their injuries is being released, Schaeffer said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
