State 1A/2B/1B girls track: Colfax girls roll to 2B title

Senior Leah Heiner could have coasted home in fourth place and still handed the State 2B track and field title to Colfax.

But that’s not how they do things in the town that won girls state titles all year.

Heiner, running the anchor leg on the 4x400-meter relay, zoomed from fourth place to the front in the closing 50 meters as the Bulldogs capped their state title with a victory in the final event at Eastern Washington University’s Roos Field.

“I saw (the Lind-Ritzville) runner in front and I just wanted to go get her,” Heiner said after Colfax won in 4 minutes, 15.50 seconds to cap its meet with 99 points, 34 ahead of the field. … “It was just a matter of focusing on that and pulling through.”

Colfax also won state titles in volleyball and basketball.

“We had points from everybody,” said Jason Cooper, who coached Colfax to the 2009 title. “We had so many kids step up and do things … that we weren’t expecting.”

The day began with senior Bailey Mackleit (15.76) and freshman Parker Warwick (15.98) finishing 1-2 in the 100 hurdles.

Colfax, disqualified Friday in the 4x200, fought back and won the 4x100 (50.63) over defending champion Tacoma Baptist.

Olivia Mellor (long jump/triple jump), Nicole Sheer (shot put/discus) and Scout Cai (high jump/100/200), Friday’s pole vault winner, added key points.

“I said, ‘Let’s move on, and whatever happens, if the stars are aligned, we’re going to be where we need to be,’ ” Cooper said.

St. George’s freshman Madison Ward won the 800 (2:22.81) on a lean against Morton-White Pass’ Kenzie Anderson.

Northwest Christian junior Isabel Clark won the 300 hurdles in 45.94.

Lakeside placed second with 52 points, 34 points behind King’s, getting wins from senior Katie Collins in the 300 hurdles (45.81) and junior Jackie Mahowald (38-8 1/2) in the triple jump. Senior Farrahn O’Hara and sophomore Samantha Blake finished 2-3 in the pole vault. Mahowald set a PR of more than 2 feet on her final attempt in the triple jump.

Chewelah’s Kaitlyn Krouse won the discus (135-2).

Mount Vernon Christian (125) topped the field by more than 77 points. Odessa-Harrington (42) placed fourth, powered by wins in the 4x100 (51.97) and 4x200 (1:49.84) relays. The 4x100 time bested the meet record (52.08) the Titans set last year.

Freshman Karlee Maioho helped Wilbur-Creston (32 1/2) to seventh by winning the 100 hurdles (16.29) in a dead heat with Bickleton’s Lindsay Brown.

“They had to look at (a replay of the hurdles) and then they had to bring more people over to verify the winner,” Maioho said. “They kept us there for minutes and it was so agonizing and crazy.”

Selkirk senior Georgie Shafer won the 300 hurdles (46.80) and finished second in the triple jump and third in the 100 hurdles.

“I was a little scared because it was the first time my family came to watch me,” said Shafer, who PR’d in the 300 hurdles by more than a second.”

Cusick freshman Alana Keogh placed second to Mt. Vernon Christian’s Carla vanRooyen in the 100 and 200. Her time (12.58) and vanRooyen’s (12.55) in the 100 both topped the meet record.
