Incident at Sunshine Mine confirmed

There has been an incident at the Sunshine Mine in North Idaho. Authorities at the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a call came in around 3 p.m. Monday afternoon. They declined to offer specific details. KHQ television is reporting that a person has died. The mine is under the process of reopening for commercial silver production. It is now owned by Denver-based Sunshine Silver Mines. Located in Big Creek, just outside Kellogg in the storied Silver Valley, the Sunshine Mine is noted for decades of prodigious silver production – 365 million ounces during more than a century of drilling and hauling ore to the surface. It’s also has a notorious history as the site where 91 miners were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in a 1972 mine fire. It ranks among the nation’s worst mining disasters.
