UW baseball eliminated with 10-inning loss to Mississippi

Sikes Orvis hit a run-scoring triple in the top of the 10th inning Monday to push Mississippi past Washington for a 3-2 victory in the championship game of the NCAA tournament’s Oxford (Mississippi) Regional.

Ole Miss (44-18) will travel to Louisiana-Lafayette in the Super Regional round this weekend.

Washington (41-17-1) threw five pitchers in the game. Alex Nesbitt (0-1) took the loss.

Ole Miss scored first when freshman Colby Bortles hit a solo homer in the second. Washington responded with a run on Branden Berry’s single in the third and then pulled ahead 2-1 on Brian Wolfe’s sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Bortles doubled home a run in the sixth to tie the game at 2 for Ole Miss.

Super regionals

College of Charleston, Kennesaw State and Pepperdine are heading to Super Regionals in the NCAA tournament after surprising opening-weekend victories.

The College of Charleston Cougars became the fourth No. 4 regional seed to reach Super Regionals since the tournament went to its current format in 1999. Pepperdine and Kennesaw State were seeded third in their regions.

Of the national seeds, No. 3 Virginia, No. 6 Louisiana-Lafayette and No. 7 TCU won regionals. No. 1 Oregon State lost 4-2 to UC Irvine late Monday.

Stanford beat No. 4 Indiana and Houston beat No. 8 LSU.

Super-Regional matchups: College of Charleston vs. Texas Tech; Kennesaw State vs. Louisville; Pepperdine vs. TCU; Ole Miss vs. Louisiana-Lafayette; Maryland vs. Virginia; Texas vs. Houston; Oklahoma State vs. UC Irvine; and Stanford vs. Vanderbilt.
