In brief: Incident reported at Sunshine Mine

There has been an incident at the Sunshine Mine in North Idaho.

The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a call came in around 3 p.m. Monday afternoon. They declined to offer specific details.

KHQ television reported Monday that a person died.

The mine is in the process of reopening for commercial silver production. It is now owned by Denver-based Sunshine Silver Mines.

Located in Big Creek, just outside Kellogg in the Silver Valley, the Sunshine Mine is noted for decades of prodigious silver production – 365 million ounces during more than a century of drilling and hauling ore to the surface.

It also has a notorious history as the site where 91 miners were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in a 1972 mine fire, which ranks among the nation’s worst mining disasters.

Jazz concert at SFCC canceled

Jazz musician Dave Douglas’ concert at Spokane Falls Community College on Thursday has been canceled.

Ticket purchases will be refunded, the community college announced.

Douglas, a trumpeter and composer, canceled due to health issues, according to a news release.

“We hope to be able to bring him out next year, and apologize for any inconvenience,” the release said.

Fight with police leads to arrest

A Spokane Valley man has been arrested for allegedly fighting with two police officers on Sunday.

Philip Lowe, 42, is accused of trying to get inside a patrol car after police were called to the 2600 block of North Pines Road.

He told police he wanted them to “either kill him or take him to jail,” records state.

Police also say Lowe was falling into the road and “doing pushups for no reason.”

Deputy L. Petersen said he initially attempted to calm Lowe, who he said assumed a “fighting stance” with clenched fists. When Lowe then grabbed another officer’s wrist, he was taken to the ground and handcuffed.

Man arrested after road rage incident

A 61-year-old man accused of threatening another driver with a pocketknife during a Saturday road rage incident has been jailed.

Witnesses said Norman Beveridge showed the knife near Wellesley Avenue and Ash Street in Spokane around 5 p.m.

Beveridge’s wife told police her husband had been drinking. The other motorist changed lanes in front of him legally and Beveridge became enraged, she said. The wife calmed him down and took the knife, according to court documents.
