People: Stone planning film about Snowden story

From Wire Reports

Oliver Stone will write and direct a film about Edward Snowden, one of two high-profile films in the works about the National Security Agency leaker.

Stone announced Monday that he plans to adapt “The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man,” a book by Guardian journalist Luke Harding. The project pairs one of cinema’s most controversial directors with one of the most explosive news events in recent years – one that is ongoing.

Stone will have some deep-pocketed competition. Sony Pictures last month purchased the big-screen rights to Glenn Greenwald’s “No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA and the U.S. Surveillance State.” The film is being produced by James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

After 20 wins, ‘Jeopardy’ reign ends

The reign of the winningest female contestant in “Jeopardy!” history has come to an end. Julia Collins, 31, lost during her 21st appearance on the pretaped episode that aired Monday. The Chicago-area resident accumulated a total of $428,100 during her 20 victories on the syndicated series.

Collins was vanquished by Brian Loughnane, an investment operations manager from Scituate, Massachusetts. Collins went into the final-question showdown in second place, bet everything and lost it. Loughnane won $22,000.

The clue that stumped her: The New England writer who in 1999 became the last person to win an Oscar for adapting his own novel as a screenplay. She failed to answer with the correct question: Who is John Irving? The novel and film was “Cider House Rules.”

Collins’ winnings helped finance a dream trip to Paris, where she rented an apartment for a month. The management consultant, who’s been enjoying a hiatus thanks to “Jeopardy!”, said she plans to get back into the work world.

Kasem can return to friends’ home

Ailing radio personality Casey Kasem can return to the Washington state home where he’s been staying with his wife if doctors approve, a judge said Monday. The ruling came a day after Kasem, 82, was taken by ambulance to a medical facility after an argument between his wife and one of his daughters.

Kasem can return to the home near Seattle where he and his wife, Jean, have been staying with friends if there’s medical supervision and doctors say it is safe to transport him, Kitsap County Superior Court Judge Jennifer Forbes said Monday. It was not immediately clear when that decision might be made.

The ruling marked the latest twist in the ongoing dispute between Jean Kasem and her stepdaughter, Kerri Kasem, who has said in legal filings that her father suffers from a form of dementia. They have been contesting who should make decisions about the entertainer’s care.
