Shock fail to score in second half, lose at Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Brian Zbydniewski pass attempt from 1 yard out on the final play of the game sailed just beyond the grasp of receiver Nick Truesdell as the Spokane Shock fell to the Jacksonville Sharks 34-28 in an Arena Football League game on Saturday.

The Shock, held scoreless in the second half, had a first-and-goal from the 3-yard line with less than a minute left. After three consecutive quarterback sneaks that forced the Sharks to use all of their timeouts, Spokane called a timeout with 4 seconds left to set up the ill-fated pass play.

A 10-yard interception return for a touchdown by Terrance Smith with 4:36 remaining in the game gave the Sharks (4-7) their first lead. Jacksonville tied the game at 28 on R.J. Archer’s 16-yard pass to Charles Gilbert with 5:37 left. It was on the Shock’s first offensive play after that score that Smith made his interception and scored.

Jacksonville’s two fourth-quarter touchdowns were the only second-half scores.

The Shock (6-6) led 28-21 at halftime on three touchdown passes by Zbydniewski, plus a 1-yard run by the quarterback.

Zbydniewski finished 16 of 29 for 193 yards with two interceptions, both by Smith. Two of his touchdown passes, of 5 and 28 yards, went to Mike Washington. Washington finished with 11 receptions for 145 yards. The other touchdown pass was an 18-yarder to Rashad Carter.

Derrick Summers had three sacks for the Shock. Linebacker Terence Moore had six tackles, a forced fumble, and two pass break-ups for Spokane, which also got an interception by Terrance Sanders.

Spokane’s biggest lead was 21-7, coming on Zbydniewski’s second TD pass to Washington with 8:31 left in the first half.

The Shock had a chance to extend their seven-point halftime lead at the start of the fourth quarter with a first-and-goal from the Jacksonville 2-yard-line. Washington caught a screen pass but was hit short of the goal line and fumbled with the Sharks recovering.

The Shock take on Pacific Division leader San Jose on the road Saturday before returning home to host San Antonio on June 20.
