Area roundup: Vandals hire Mariana Cobra to coach women’s tennis

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 2014

The Idaho Vandals hired Mariana Cobra to be the women’s head tennis coach, UI director of tennis Jeff Beaman announced on Tuesday.

Cobra was the women’s tennis coach at Northern Iowa in 2012-13.

Cobra also played at Northern Iowa and was a three-time ITA scholar-athlete and two-time Missouri Valley Conference scholar athlete.

She takes over a program that won its first conference championship and reached its first NCAA tournament after winning the Western Athletic Conference tourney.

Football

Three Washington State Cougars were named to Phil Steele Magazine’s preseason All-Pac-12 third team.

Junior defensive end Xavier Cooper, junior wide receiver Gabe Marks and junior linebacker Darryl Monroe were tabbed.

WSU opens the 2014 season Aug. 28 in Seattle against Rutgers.
