Canadiens sign Michel Therrien to 4-year extension

The Montreal Canadiens have signed head coach Michel Therrien to a four-year contract extension on Saturday, two weeks after they were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs. Therrien, who has coached the Canadiens for the past two seasons, has one year remaining on his contract before the extension starts. He led Montreal to the playoffs twice in the past two years, falling to the Ottawa Senators in five games in the first round in 2012-13. He followed that up with a loss to the New York Rangers in six games in the Eastern Conference final this year. Therrien also coached the Canadiens for parts of the 2000-2003 seasons. Therrien coached the Pittsburgh Penguins for parts of four seasons, making it to the Stanley Cup finals in 2008 before losing to the Red Wings. – AP
