Three officers named in police shooting death

Idaho State Police has released the names of three officers it is investigating in the June 6 shooting death of a Coeur d’Alene man. Sgt. Greg Moore, Officer Johann Schmitz and Officer Jacob Nielsen — all three of the Coeur d’Alene Police Department — have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, according to an ISP press release. The officers were called to a domestic disturbance complaint on the 400 block of E. Dragonfly Drive where they found Thomas White, 28, of Coeur d’Alene, in a next-door neighbor’s backyard. Initial police reports claimed White was armed and ignored repeated demands from the officers to drop his weapon. White then pointed a gun at the officers and exchanged gunfire with the three officers, according to police. White was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. None of the officers were injured in the standoff, said ISP spokeswoman Teresa Baker. Sgt. Moore has been with the department 15 years, while Officer Schmitz has 2 years and Officer Nelson 1 1/2 years, the release said. Results of White’s autopsy are pending and detectives are continuing the investigation.
