Injured Kansas center Joel Embiid, one of the top prospects in the upcoming NBA draft, has a stress fracture in his right foot and is scheduled to have surgery today. Embiid’s agent, Arn Tellem, says Embiid fractured the navicular bone in his right foot and will be unable to participate in any additional workouts. Embiid was widely considered to be the favorite for the No. 1 overall draft pick.

Withdrawn Spain’s Nicolas Almagro has withdrawn from Wimbledon because of a foot injury. The withdrawal of the 25th-seeded clay-court specialist means Vasek Pospisil of Canada has been promoted to the No. 31 seed and Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov elevated into the seedings at 32.

Scheduled Champion Wladimir Klitschko will defend his WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO heavyweight belts against the undefeated Kubrat Pulev of Bulgaria in Hamburg on September 9. The 33-year-old Pulev has 11 knockouts from 20 wins. He became the IBF international champion in 2011 and European heavyweight champion in 2012.

Unopposed Serbian Nenad Lalovic will run unopposed for re-election as president of wrestling’s world governing body. Lalovic took over at FILA after wrestling was dropped as a core sport by the IOC executive board in February 2013, replacing Raphael Martinetti. He led wrestling’s successful campaign to win back its place on the Olympic program for 2020 and 2024.

Signed The Colorado Avalanche signed left winger Jamie McGinn to a two-year deal. The 25-year McGinn had 19 goals and 19 assists in 79 games last season in helping the Avalanche tie a franchise record with 52 wins. He also had three game-winning goals. McGinn was acquired by Colorado in a trade with San Jose on Feb. 27, 2012.

Dismissed Center Saku Koivu, goalie Jonas Hiller and forward Daniel Winnik won’t be offered contracts with the Anaheim Ducks for next season.
