Hasek likely to lead Hockey HOF class

From Staff And Wire Reports

HOCKEY: Dominik Hasek was still playing hockey a few years ago at age 46.

He put on his goalie pads for the final time Feb. 27, 2011, in Russia’s KHL.

At the age of 49, “the Dominator” is expected to be part of the class of 2014 at the Hockey Hall of Fame, which will be announced today.

“For me it’s a no-brainer,” former Buffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said earlier this year.

Hasek, a six-time Vezina Trophy winner, won one Stanley Cup as a starter with the Detroit Red Wings in 2002, then split time with Chris Osgood and became the backup in the playoffs for the 2008 title. He came close to the Cup in 1999 with Buffalo, only to be beaten by the Dallas Stars.

Hasek’s best years came with the Sabres, when he had seven straight seasons with a save percentage of .930 or higher. He finished with 234 regular-season victories.

Fans’ folly benefits Cordoba team

Soccer: Cordoba has been promoted to Spain’s first division for the first time since 1972 – thanks to a premature surge onto the field by Las Palmas fans and a last-gasp goal for a 1-1 draw in Gran Canaria, Spain.

Las Palmas was winning 1-0 with less than 2 minutes of stoppage time left Sunday. Several dozen home fans then took to the field, forcing a 10-minute delay. Cordoba made one last push that ended with a goal by Ulises Davila.

After the match, TV images showed Las Palmas fans fighting, with some blaming the result on those who ran on the field. Police escorted match officials off the field before a few fans threw chairs from the bleachers.

Costa claims third Tour de Suisse

Cycling: World road champion Rui Costa won his third straight Tour de Suisse after clinching the ninth and final stage in Saas-Fee, Switzerland.

The 27-year-old Portuguese made his move with 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) of the 156.7-kilometer mountainous stage to go. Costa finished 14 seconds ahead of Dutch cyclist Bauke Mollema and 24 seconds in front of Switzerland’s Mathias Frank.

Frank was second overall, 33 seconds behind Costa, with third-placed Mollema 50 seconds off the pace. Costa, of the Lampre-Merida team, started the day in third, 1 minute, 5 seconds behind time trial world champion Tony Martin of Germany, who had been leading since the opening stage.
