Former Gonzaga pitcher Gonzales to make major league debut

DENVER – Former Gonzaga University pitcher Marco Gonzales has been called up to the St. Louis Cardinals and will make his Major League debut Wednesday against his home state Colorado Rockies.

A native of Fort Collins, Colo., he will make his Major League debut just a little over a year after being the 19th player drafted in the 2013 draft following his junior season with the Bulldogs.

Gonzales has pitched at Class A Palm Beach (Florida) of the Florida State League and Class AA Springfield (Missouri) of the Texas League this season, compiling a 5-4 record with a 1.89 ERA in 76.1 innings. He has struck out 78 and walked 18 in 13 starts.

The Cardinals also recalled right-hander Eric Fornataro and infielder Pete Kozma from Triple-A Memphis to fill the roster spots of injured pitchers Michael Wacha and Jamie Garcia.

Wacha (right shoulder stress reaction) and Garcia (left shoulder inflammation) were placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday. Garcia’s move was retroactive to Saturday and Wacha’s placement was retroactive to last Wednesday.
