Man says he robbed sandwich shop with rock

David Bentley, 20, told police he was homeless, needed money

From staff reports
Spokane police arrested on Tuesday a 20-year-old man on suspicions of armed robbery stemming from a June 8 sandwich shop robbery he said he committed with a rock, according to court records. Investigators used fingerprint evidence found at a dental office near the Subway restaurant at 2928 S. Grand Blvd. to link David Bentley to the robbery. A store employee said a man wearing a gray baseball cap and sunglasses entered the shop around 7:30 p.m. and demanded cash, according to court documents. The clerk handed over about $200 and the man ran from the store, he told police. The robber repeatedly threatened to shoot the clerk, according to court documents. The employee saw what he thought was a gun in the robber’s pocket, he told police. Police located Bentley on Tuesday, and he initially denied involvement in the robbery, according to court records. He later told police he had a rock in his pocket during the incident, and said he robbed the store because he had no money or place to live. In a news release, Spokane police said the investigation into the robbery is continuing.
