Kindergarten sign-ups begin for Central Valley, Spokane schools

If your child is 5 years old on or before Aug. 31 this year and you live in the Central Valley School District, you can enroll for kindergarten for the 2014-15 school year.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday. Parents are encouraged to enroll their children early. There are various options: morning classes, afternoon classes or full day. Options vary by school.

The district will also accept registrations for new first-grade students Thursday.

Registrations will take place at your neighborhood school during school hours. Bring up-to-date immunization records, an original state-certified birth certificate and proof of residence using a current electric bill. Registration packets are available for parents to pick up prior to Thursday.

Washington State Department of Health requires proof of immunity to chickenpox. This is defined as two doses of varicella vaccine, a titer test confirming immunity, or a doctor or health care provider verification of having the disease. Parent reporting is no longer accepted, and children can’t be enrolled until vaccinations are complete.

Kindergarten students living in the Liberty Lake and Greenacres elementary school enrollment areas must register at the Central Valley Kindergarten Center, 1512 N. Barker Road.

For more information, call the district at (509) 228-5425 or visit www.cvsd.org.

Spokane Public Schools will begin registering students for kindergarten Monday.

Families can register at their neighborhood elementary school from 8:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. on school days.

The school district uses a lottery system to enroll students in kindergarten. By June 1, principals will select kindergarten placements. Priority will be given to children of full-time certificated and classified school employees and children with siblings already attending the requested school. If you live in the Spokane school district, visit www.spokaneschools.org for information.

‘Meet the Principal Candidates’

Principal Dave Bouge of Bowdish Middle School in the Central Valley School District is retiring after 37 years in education.

As part of the hiring process for a new principal, the district will host a “Meet the Principal Candidates” forum with the finalists.

Parents, students, staff and interested community members are invited to attend the forum Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school, 2109 S. Skipworth Road.

Each candidate will spend 30 minutes speaking about their qualifications and responding to questions from the audience. Audience members will be invited to submit written feedback for consideration by the selection committee.
