Monterola wins indoor pole vault

Eastern Washington senior Keisa Monterola won her fourth pole vault title Saturday at the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships in Pocatello, Idaho.

Monterola cleared 13 feet, 5 3/4 inches. Freshman Courtney Bray was fourth with a mark of 12-10.

The Eagle women finished eighth and the men took fifth.

Jon Buchanan led the men’s team with a second-place finish in the shot put. Buchanan’s toss of 58-5 1/4 ranks second in school history.

EWU’s Brad Michael was third in the 400-meter dash in 48.25 seconds and Austin Upmeyer was seventh in 50.58.

The Northern Arizona men and women claimed the team titles. The Lumberjacks’ Nathan Weitz (Shadle Park High School) won the men’s mile in 4 minutes, 11.05 seconds. Montana’s Keith Webber (Mead) won the men’s pole vault, reaching a height of 17-0 3/4.

• Washington State’s Jesse Jorgensen won the 800 and the Cougar men took eighth place at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championships at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle.

Jorgensen finished in a lifetime-best time of 1:48.84.

WSU’s Dino Dodig was third in the men’s heptathlon with 5,503 points, the second best point total in school history.

Jacob Sealby was fourth in the 400 in 47.45 seconds.

Washington’s A.J. Marachich (Mead) was second in the high jump with a height of 6-11.

The Cougar women were led by Charlotte Muschamp, who took third in the triple jump (40-4), and Thane Pierson, who tied for fourth in the high jump with a personal-best height of 6-11. The Washington State women took 10th place.

Swimming

The Washington State women finished eighth at the Pac-12 Championships in Federal Way, Wash.

Cougar freshman Kendra Griffin was 15th in the 1,650 freestyle and 23rd in the 200 butterfly.

Baseball

Washington State’s game at Cal State Northridge was postponed for the second straight day due to rain, and is expected to be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

• Gonzaga’s game against Manhattan College in Surprise, Ariz., was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Softball

Whitworth swept Pacific Lutheran (1-8, 0-5) in Parkland, Wash., and the Pirates have won seven straight Northwest Conference games.

Whitworth rallied after falling behind 3-0 early and beat the Lutes 4-3 in the opener. The Pirates’ Megan John hit a two-run double in the fifth and Brittany Connor’s bunt single in the sixth scored Kelsey Stroshine to put Whitworth ahead for good.

The Pirates (14-3, 7-0) won the nightcap 4-2. Julia Johnson hit a two-run home run in the third to spark Whitworth’s offense. Freshman Madi Perez earned the win after giving up a run on four hits in four innings.

The series concludes today.
