People: DeGeneres lands Oscars high ratings

Sunday night’s Oscars ceremony, featuring host Ellen DeGeneres, got its biggest audience in 10 years.

The 86th Academy Awards, telecast on ABC, drew 43 million viewers on average, according to Nielsen, up about 6 percent from last year’s show, hosted by Seth MacFarlane, which ended up with 40.4 million viewers.

The viewership record for the Oscars was set in 1998, when the gala drew 55.3 million people and “Titanic” won 11 Oscars.

DeGeneres’ performance featured a much tweeted-about “selfie” photo taken with a cluster of stars, and at one point she brought in pizza for audience members. The comedian last hosted in 2007.

West signs with Jay-Z management

Jay-Z’s Roc Nation will now manage Kanye West.

The management company and West’s label announced Monday that Roc Nation will work alongside West’s production house, Donda, on managing the Grammy-winning superstar’s music endeavors.

Roc Nation manages Rihanna, Shakira, Timbaland and other acts.

West burst on the music scene as a producer on Jay-Z’s albums, and the two eventually collaborated on various songs and albums.

Arby’s nabs Pharrell’s Grammy hat

Arby’s has won the bid for Pharrell’s famous hat.

The fast-food restaurant announced Sunday it paid $44,100 for the Vivienne Westwood hat, made famous when Pharrell wore it at the Grammy Awards in January.

The Arby’s logo uses a design similar to the brown fedora, which became a trending topic on Twitter after Pharrell sported it.

The producer-rapper-singer put the hat on eBay two weeks ago. The earnings will support his charity From One Hand to Another.

Malala phoneless, for now

Malala Yousafzai may be the only teenager who doesn’t have a mobile phone – and is willing to admit it.

The girl who was shot by the Taliban for daring to want an education set off a chorus of chuckles Monday night when she said she didn’t own a handset during a conference showcasing cellphone provider Vodafone’s initiatives to support women.

With Vodafone CEO Vittorio Colao in the front row, it’s a good bet she’ll get one soon, and with the best 4G available. If not, International Development Minister Justine Greening offered to give her a spare.
