Thompson hits winning shot at the buzzer
NBA: Klay Thompson made a 12-foot turnaround jumper with 0.6 seconds left, and the Golden State Warriors held off Indiana 98-96 on Tuesday to hand the Pacers only their fourth loss in Indianapolis this season.
Thompson, the former Washington State standout, scored 16 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter. Stephen Curry finished with 19 points for the Warriors, who have won five of six. It was their first win at Indiana in seven years.
• Clippers win fifth straight: Matt Barnes scored 18 of his season-high 28 points in the third quarter and the visiting Los Angeles Clippers won their fifth game in a row, 104-96 over the Phoenix Suns.
• Howard powers Rockets past Heat: Dwight Howard had 22 points and 16 rebounds, James Harden added 21 points and the Houston Rockets held LeBron James in check in a 106-103 win over the visiting Miami Heat.
James had 22 points, one night after setting a club record with a career-best 61 against Charlotte. He acknowledged before the game that he was “extremely tired” and that he spent most of the day sleeping.
He missed a desperation 3-point attempt at the buzzer that would have tied it.
• Westbrook, Durant lead Thunder: Russell Westbrook had a triple-double in 21 minutes and Kevin Durant scored 42 points to help the Oklahoma City Thunder defeat the woeful Philadelphia 76ers 125-92 at Oklahoma City.
Westbrook finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists.
• Pelicans end losing streak: Anthony Davis had 28 points and 15 rebounds, Eric Gordon also scored 28 and the visiting New Orleans Pelicans beat the Los Angeles Lakers 132-125 to snap an eight-game losing streak.
Brian Roberts scored 10 of his 19 points for New Orleans during the fourth quarter. • Boston’s Wallace out for season: Boston Celtics forward Gerald Wallace is sidelined for the rest of the season after undergoing arthroscopic surgeries on his left knee and left ankle.
Georgia Tech upsets slumping Syracuse
College men’s basketball: Trae Golden scored 16 points, including six clutch free throws in the final seconds, and visiting Georgia Tech stunned struggling No. 7 Syracuse 67-62.
Syracuse (26-4, 13-4 ACC) had lost three of four coming into the game. Georgia Tech (14-16, 5-12) snapped a four-game losing streak.
• Frazier II scores 37 for No. 1 Gators: Michael Frazier II set a Florida record with 11 3-pointers to finish with a career-high 37 points and help the top-ranked Gators (28-2, 17-0) move a game from a perfect SEC season with a 72-46 victory over South Carolina (11-9, 4-13) at Columbia, S.C.
• Wolverines clinch title: Nik Stauskas scored 24 points and No. 12 Michigan (22-7, 14-3) shot 70 percent from the 3-point line to win its first Big Ten title outright since 1986 with an 84-53 victory over Illinois (17-13, 6-11) at Champaign, Ill.
• Hoyas beat No. 13 Creighton: D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera had 18 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, and Georgetown (17-12, 8-9 Big East) frustrated Doug McDermott until late in the game, holding off a rally led by the nation’s leading scorer in a 75-63 win over No. 13 Creighton (23-6, 13-4) at Washington.
• Baylor knocks off Iowa State: Brady Heslip scored 18 points, including all five of his 3-pointers after halftime, and Baylor (20-12, 8-9 Big 12) got a much-needed boost to its NCAA tournament hopes with a 74-61 victory over No. 16 Iowa State (22-7, 10-7) at Waco, Texas.
• Kentucky rallies to beat Alabama: Julius Randle had 12 points and 11 rebounds and No. 25 Kentucky (22-8, 12-5 SEC) rallied past Alabama (12-18, 6-11) 55-48 at Lexington, Ky., to end a two-game losing streak.
Canucks deal Luongo back to Florida
NHL: Several big-name hockey players were on the move, 24 hours before the trading deadline runs out, including star goalie Roberto Luongo, who was ushered out of Vancouver and sent back to Florida eight years after he was sent packing.
The Panthers, on their way to missing the playoffs for the 13th time in 14 seasons, dealt goalie Jacob Markstrom and forward Shawn Matthias to the Canucks for Luongo and forward Steven Anthony.
The Anaheim Ducks sent goalie Viktor Fasth to the Edmonton Oilers for a 2014 fifth-round draft pick and a 2015 third-round selection. Edmonton then traded veteran goalie Ilya Bryzgalov to the Minnesota Wild for a fourth-round draft pick this year.
The Ducks traded forward Dustin Penner to the Washington Capitals for a fourth-round draft pick this year and then quickly moved that pick to the Dallas Stars for veteran defenseman Stephane Robidas.
• Grabner scores in OT: Former Spokane Chief Michael Grabner scored on a breakaway 3:53 into overtime as the visiting New York Islanders defeated Winnipeg 3-2.
Cal Clutterbuck sent a pass from around the blue line up to Grabner, who slipped between two Jets and beat goalie Ondrej Pavelec.
Beavers’ crew boat crashes into bridge
Miscellany: A $35,000 crew boat was totaled and nine members of the Oregon State University men’s rowing team were rescued when the vessel smashed into a bridge support on the Willamette River.
Three team members started drifting downstream, and the others clung to the wrecked craft. A coach in a powerboat helped rescue the students. No serious injuries were reported.
• North Texas coach receives new deal: North Texas football coach Dan McCarney is getting a new five-year contract after leading the Mean Green to nine wins and their first bowl victory in 11 seasons.
• Dream hire Edwards: Five-time Olympian and basketball Hall of Famer Teresa Edwards has agreed to become an assistant coach for the Atlanta Dream.
Edwards won four gold medals and one bronze medal in the Olympics.
• West Virginia secures share of title: Bria Holmes scored 16 points to lead No. 7 West Virginia (27-3, 16-2 Big 12) to a 67-60 victory over Kansas (12-18, 5-13) at Morgantown, W.Va., for a share of the Big 12 women’s basketball championship.
