In brief: Bill targets using orcas for shows

San Diego – A California state lawmaker wants to ban SeaWorld from using killer whales in its San Diego shows.

Assemblyman Richard Bloom, who unveiled the bill Friday, said orcas are too large and intelligent to be confined in small tanks for their entire lives.

His measure also would ban captive breeding and prohibit the import and export of orcas.

SeaWorld spokesman Dave Koontz said the company hasn’t seen Bloom’s legislation and can’t comment on it.

Turner hospitalized in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, Argentina – American media mogul Ted Turner was hospitalized Friday for an undisclosed ailment in Argentina’s capital.

The 75-year-old CNN founder was first treated earlier Friday at the San Carlos Sanatorium in Bariloche, near his ranch in Argentina’s Patagonia region. A spokeswoman there said Turner left that clinic after about four hours.

Aryan leader pleads guilty to conspiracy

Houston – The head of the white supremacist Aryan Brotherhood of Texas pleaded guilty Friday in federal court to a racketeering conspiracy that included murder, kidnapping and drug trafficking.

Under federal law, Larry Max Bryan, 52, could be sentenced to up to life in prison. The plea agreement calls for prosecutors to recommend that Bryan be sentenced to no more than 25 years. Sentencing is set for Oct. 7.

Bryan was among nearly three dozen people allegedly affiliated with the Aryan Brotherhood who were charged in a sweeping indictment unsealed in 2012.

Dozens of defendants have been convicted in an ongoing federal investigation of the military-style gang founded in Texas prisons in the 1980s to offer protection to white inmates.
