Jimmy Sinatro hit a three-run double as part of Gonzaga’s five-run second inning and the Bulldogs held on to beat San Francisco 6-5 in a West Coast Conference baseball opener Friday at Benedetti Stadium in San Francisco.
The win was GU’s first against the Dons (8-7) since April 9, 2010.
Bulldogs starter Taylor Jones survived some early struggles to secure his second win of the season. He pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on four hits while striking out six.
Sam Brown, Caleb Wood and Cory LeBrun also drove in runs for Gonzaga (5-12), which won its second straight following a four-game skid. The second game of the three-game series will be played today at 1 p.m.
• James Harris allowed one run in nine innings, Trent Gilbert drove in four runs, and Arizona (11-9) dumped Washington State (4-9) 12-1 in a Pac-12 Conference opener in Tucson, Ariz.
WSU’s lone run came in the ninth, when Ian Sagdal hit a two-out double to drive in Cameron Frost.
The second game of the three-game series is tonight at 6.
• Brett Lilek allowed one run over seven innings and Arizona State clipped Washington 4-1 in a Pac-12 Conference opener in Tempe, Ariz.
The Sun Devils (9-6) gained an early advantage with three runs in the third.
The Huskies’ lone run came in the seventh, when Trevor Mitsui scored on Erik Forgione’s RBI triple. Washington fell to 10-5-1 overall.
Track and field
Washington State junior Jesse Jorgensen took fifth place in his heat in the 800-meter run at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., and earned the last qualifying spot for today’s finals. Jorgensen finished in 1 minute, 50.79 seconds.
• Whitworth senior Casey Monohan finished fourth in his heat in the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA Division III Championships in Lincoln, Neb. Monahan finished in 8.13 seconds – a Whitworth indoor school record – and earned a spot in today’s finals.
Eastern Washington sophomore Marissa Borja shot a two-round total of 145 and claimed the individual title at the Southern Utah Invitational in St. George, Utah. The Eagles finished sixth as a team. Weber State claimed the team title.
Borja shot an even-par 72 in the first round and followed it up with a 73 in the second round. She finished four shots better than Oral Roberts’ Alheli Moreno, who took second.
Kylee Lahners had two hits – including her 10th home run of the year – and drove in two runs as Washington (20-4) topped Utah (9-9) 5-2 in a Pac-12 Conference opener in Seattle. The Huskies’ Bryana Walker improved to 12-2 after giving up one earned run on four hits in six innings.
