Conference tournaments: Iowa State takes down Kansas

Arkansas St. wins in 4OTs

Melvin Johnson III scored 19 points and converted a three- point play with 6 seconds left in quadruple overtime to help No. 4 seed Arkansas State outlast fifth-seeded Arkansas-Little Rock 116-114 in a first-round Sun Belt Conference game Friday in New Orleans. The Red Wolves (19-12) will face top-seeded Georgia State in the semifinals Saturday. Ed Townsel scored 32 for Arkansas State, Kirk Van Slyke added 24 and Brandon Reed 23. Leroy Isler led UALR (15-17) with 25 points.

Georges Niang scored 25 points before leaving with a bloody gash to his forehead in the closing minutes, and No. 16 Iowa State (25-8) held on to beat No. 10 Kansas (24-9) 94-83 Friday night in Kansas City, Mo., to reach the Big 12 title game. Iowa State will play Baylor tonight after the Bears knocked off Texas 86-69 behind 20 points and 13 rebounds from Cory Jefferson.

Atlantic Coast

Rodney Hood hit two free throws with 3.8 seconds left to lift No. 7 Duke (25-7) past Clemson (20-12) 63-62 Friday night in the ACC quarterfinals in Greensboro, N.C.

Duke will play North Carolina State today in a semifinal. The Wolfpack (21-12) knocked off No. 11 Syracuse 66-63 behind T.J. Warren’s 28 points. Syracuse (27-5) had one wild final possession, missing six shots, including four 3’s.

In the other semi, No. 6 Virginia will face Pittsburgh. The Cavaliers (26-6) defeated Florida State (19-13) 64-51. The Panthers (25-8) survived a furious rally to beat No. 15 North Carolina (23-9) 80-75.

Big Ten

Jordan Morgan scored on a layup with 7.9 seconds left, giving No. 8 Michigan a 64-63 victory over Illinois (19-14) in the Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis.

Michigan (24-7) will play Ohio State (25-8), which rallied to defeat Nebraska (19-12) 71-67. No. 22 Michigan State also advanced to the semis, beating Northwestern 67-51. The Spartans will face No. 12 Wisconsin (26-6), which pummeled Minnesota (20-13) 83-57.

Southeastern

Scottie Wilbekin scored 15 points and No. 1 Florida remained unbeaten in the SEC, using one of its customary spurts to rout Missouri 72-49 in the quarterfinals of the league tournament in Atlanta.

Florida advanced to face Tennessee (21-11), who beat South Carolina (14-20) 59-44.

In other action, Charles Mann scored a go-ahead basket with 17 seconds remaining, and Georgia (19-12) edged Mississippi (19-14) 75-73. The Bulldogs will battle Kentucky (23-9), who topped LSU (19-13) 85-67.

Big East

Doug McDermott scored 32 points and 14th-ranked Creighton (26-6) advanced to the championship game with an 86-78 victory over Xavier (21-12) in New York. The Bluejays will face Providence tonight. The Friars (22-11) beat Seton Hall (17-17) 80-74.
