In brief: U.S. 2 collision kills Newport woman

A head-on collision killed a 39-year-old Newport, Wash., woman on U.S. Highway 2 between Oldtown and Priest River on Friday afternoon, according to the Idaho State Police.

Christopher Jewsbury, 50, of Spokane, was westbound in a pickup truck about 5:15 p.m. when his truck crossed the centerline and sideswiped an eastbound Chevy Trailblazer driven by David Oakes, 61, of Olympia, according to the ISP. Jewsbury then crashed head-on into a sedan driven by Amy Brady, of Newport, who was behind Oakes. Brady, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jewsbury was taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The cause of the crash is being investigated, the ISP said.

Author seeks records of 2012 UM rape case

HELENA – Jon Krakauer is asking a judge to order the release of records in the 2012 rape case against University of Montana quarterback Jordan Johnson for a new book the “Into the Wild” author is writing, according to a petition filed in state court in Helena.

Krakauer’s book deals in part with how the Montana Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education handled a decision in a student complaint of sexual assault against Johnson, according to the petition filed Feb. 12 by attorney Mike Meloy.

A jury acquitted Johnson last year in state court of raping a female acquaintance. Testimony in that trial confirmed the university held its own misconduct proceedings against Johnson before the state trial.

Krakauer’s petition says the university court found Johnson guilty of rape and ordered him expelled.

But Johnson was not expelled. He was temporarily suspended from the football team after the charge was filed, then reinstated. He led the team to a 10-3 record last year.
