Jones’ 2-run single lifts WSU over Arizona

P.J. Jones hit a two-run single in the top of the ninth inning and Washington State rallied past Arizona 6-5 in a Pac-12 Conference game Saturday night in Tucson, Ariz.

Jones finished with three hits and three RBIs and Yale Rosen added four hits and scored on Jones’ winning hit.

Ian Hamilton picked up the win after getting the final five outs without allowing a run.

The Wildcats (11-10, 1-1) routed the Cougars (5-9, 1-1) 12-1 in Friday’s series opener. The three-game series concludes today.

• Gonzaga scored three times in the first inning and held on to beat San Francisco 4-3 in a West Coast Conference game in San Francisco.

GU’s Cory LeBrun and Caleb Wood each had RBI singles in the first. The Bulldogs (6-12, 2-0) added unearned runs in the first and third innings to take an early 4-0 lead.

The Dons (8-8, 0-2) rallied late, scoring three runs in the eighth, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

GU starter Brandon Bailey earned the win after giving up three runs on six hits in 7 1/3 innings.

• Braden Bishop and Robert Pehl drove in three runs apiece as Washington (11-5-1, 1-1) rallied late to beat Arizona State (9-7, 1-1) 9-3 in a Pac-12 Conference game in Tempe, Ariz.

The Huskies scored six times in the eighth to break open a tie game. The series concludes today.

• Whitworth earned a Northwest Conference split with Pacific Lutheran at Merkel Field in Spokane.

The Lutes’ Trevor Lubking pitched all nine innings in the opener. He gave up one run on three hits while striking out 13, leading PLU to a 3-1 win.

The Pirates’ lone run came on Nick Motsinger’s solo home run in the first.

Whitworth starter Cory Mack was masterful in the nightcap, giving up just one hit through eight innings as the Pirates won 4-0. Taylor Isadore pitched a scoreless ninth inning and picked up his third save of the year.

Thomas Wakem drove in three runs to lead Whitworth at the plate.

The Pirates (6-8, 3-2) and Lutes (11-5, 6-1) will conclude the three-game series today at noon.

• Community Colleges of Spokane (4-2) swept Prairie Academy in a nonconference doubleheader at Spokane Falls Community College.

Michael Heaton had three hits and scored twice as the Sasquatch claimed the opener 7-1.

In the nightcap, CCS overcame an early 3-0 deficit and won 7-5. The Sasquatch were led by Kyle Weiler and Heaton, who drove in two runs apiece.

Track and field

Whitworth’s Casey Monahan broke his school record in the 60-meter hurdles and finished in sixth place at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in Lincoln, Neb.

Monahan finished in 8.12 seconds, bettering the school record of 8.13 he set Friday in the preliminaries.

• Washington State’s Jesse Jorgensen took eighth in the men’s 800 meters at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.

Jorgensen finished in 1:50.33. Mississippi State’s Brandon McBride won the event in 1:48.17.

• Gonzaga had 20 top-five finishers, including four event-winners, at the Dusty Lane Open at SFCC.

Shelly Davis was first in the women’s 1,500 in a personal-best 4:41.34.

Andy Phillips won the men’s 800 in 1:54.40, Joe LaMontagne claimed the 1,500 in 3:59.41 and Matthew Crichlow was first in the 5,000 in 14:48.55

Whitworth’s Kerry Wright broke her school record in the women’s javelin. She reached a distance of 150 feet, 6 inches, bettering her previous mark of 149 feet.

Eastern Washington was led by Jon Buchanan, who won the shot put (53-11 1/4) and was fourth in the hammer throw (178-1).

Men’s golf

Gonzaga posted the third-lowest score during the third and final round of the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas, and finished sixth overall.

James Fahy shot a 1-over-par 73 at Laredo Country Club and finished tied for 10th.

Softball

Led by its stingy pitching staff, Whitworth (16-6, 9-3) earned a Northwest Conference sweep of Puget Sound (0-11, 0-11) in the Pirates’ home opener.

Madi Perez allowed two hits and a run in six innings as the Pirates won the opener 9-1. Taylor Gilbert had two hits and drove in four runs to lead Whitworth at the plate.

In the nightcap, Julia Johnson had three RBIs and the Pirates topped the Loggers 6-2.

• Kate Dickman’s sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth brought home the go-ahead run and Utah (10-9, 1-1) beat No. 5 Washington (20-5, 1-1) 3-2 in a Pac-12 Conference game in Seattle.

UW’s Kaitlin Inglesby allowed one earned run in seven innings and also hit a solo home run.

Prep basketball

Bonneville’s Jared Stutzman scored 23 points and Capital’s Hunter Young added 20 as the South beat the North 117-96 in the Idaho all-state boys game at Christianson Gym at North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene.

Lake City’s J.J. Winger led the North with 18 points. Sandpoint’s Jeremiah Gagnon added 14 and Lake City’s Justin Pratt chipped in 12.

The South beat the North 89-73 in the girls game. Lake City’s Hailey Jackson led the North with 15 points and Hailey Olin (Sandpoint), Sydney Williams (Coeur d’Alene) and Sydni Parker (Coeur d’Alene) each added 10.

Skyview’s Bailey Pasta, playing for the South squad, led all scorers with 19 points.
