The Slice: A fitting tribute to Grandpa

The mention of paper airplanes in a Slice column last week prompted a note from a North Idaho reader. “At my husband’s memorial service in February, our grandkids had the honor of giving out the memorial celebration handouts to arriving guests,” wrote Sue Jones. “Our 10-year-old, Quincy, and 6-year-old, Tyler, called them ‘customers.’” The boys are still working on their vocabulary. “At one point I looked over and saw Q & T making paper airplanes of the handouts. My first reaction was to admonish and stop them, but after all they are only kids. I did save one of the paper airplanes and it is in Grandpa’s memory book. Grandpa would have loved the ‘boys will be boys’ moment.”

A) I don’t think you can truly embrace a new season’s arrival if you do not appreciate and celebrate all four. B) Compared to what much of the country experienced, we didn’t have much of a winter. I don’t get these people who act like spring is riding to our rescue. C) I am a typical Spokane-area resident. I wish it were 90 degrees and sunny every day of the year. D) I can contain my excitement about spring. I have allergies. E) I rely on Spokane TV news personalities to be my spirit guides when it comes to knowing how I should feel about the weather. F) Other.

TRY NOT TO THINK ABOUT THE FACT THAT…: At this very moment, there is an untold number of motorists driving in the Spokane area despite the fact that their backs are momentarily screwed up for one reason or another. As a result, they cannot really turn their heads side to side.

FILL IN THE BLANKS: Complaining about rain in Spokane is like complaining about ___________ in ___________.
