In brief: County boards, commissions, have openings

SPOKANE COUNTY – Spokane County commissioners are seeking applicants to fill several vacancies on boards and commissions.

One position is a vacancy on the Spokane Housing Authority for an at-large citizen representative.

The appointee needs to have experience in housing development, affordable housing finance and development, and providing housing in the community.

The commissioners are also seeking to fill a vacancy to a joint city-county position on the Airport Board.

Three more positions are open on the county’s Board of Equalization, which rules in property tax appeals. Those board members receive a $100 a day stipend when they are required to meet.

Black and Brown summit for men Saturday at SCC

EAST SPOKANE – Community Colleges of Spokane and Eastern Washington University are hosting the Black and Brown Male Summit from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in SCC’s Lair Student Building 6, 1810 N. Greene St.

The goal of the summit is “to empower and motivate our black and brown men to excel in academics and social achievement,” said Lori Hunt, SCC director of multicultural student services.

The keynote speaker is Rashad Norris, director of community engagement at Highline Community College, and a coordinator of Black and Brown Male Summits since 2010.

The summit also features seminars that examine masculinity and stereotypes of men of color.

High Drive project’s changes updated online

SOUTH HILL – The city of Spokane has updated the online blog that outlines the High Drive restoration project which runs from 29th Avenue to Bernard Street.

Among the changes is removal of a proposed buffer between the new paved path and the roadway, as well as a narrowing of that path. The project is scheduled to begin this spring.

Ham on Regal back for 51st run at Ferris

SOUTHEAST SPOKANE – The 51st annual Ham on Regal fundraiser is this week at Ferris High School.

“New Digs for Cool Pigs – Fables From the AuditoriHAM” is a parent-produced and parent-coordinated musical.

The dress rehearsal is at 2 p.m. Sunday, with shows Wednesday through March 29 at 7 p.m. as well as a matinee on March 29 at 1:30 p.m.

The production is made up of more than 250 parents who perform and act as a “ham” as they sing, dance, jump and jive.

Tickets range from $7 to $9 and are available from any cast member, as well as the school office.
