Loud patriots play it safe

In reference to Ted Wert’s March 9 letter complaining about columnist Charles Krauthammer: I’m not sure I agree with the writer’s conclusion that maybe it’s time to bring the draft back, but I am of the impression that the most demonstrably patriotic folks often are those who have never been shot at or shelled.

Not that I’m against defending this nation, but I’m not as convinced that every war we fight, or consider fighting, accomplishes that, especially if it involves sacrificing our troops to dubious doctrine or inadequate medical care and benefits.
