In brief: Avalanche kills man near Snoqualmie Pass

SNOQUALMIE PASS, Wash. – A man was killed in an avalanche on Granite Mountain near Snoqualmie Pass.

King County sheriff’s Sgt. Cindi West said he was found dead Sunday morning.

A second person hit in the avalanche Saturday was able to walk out.

Post-concert shooting kills man, hurts another

YAKIMA – One man was killed and one wounded in a shooting following a rap concert Saturday night in Yakima.

Officers were called about 11 p.m. to a report of a large fight with gunfire. When they arrived they found a 22-year-old and a 19-year-old wounded in the street.

Both men were taken to a hospital, where the 22-year-old died from a chest wound.

Police took several people who were in the area into custody for questioning about a possible suspect.

Park Service taking bids to run Glacier chalets

KALISPELL – The National Park Service is accepting applications to operate two historic chalets at Glacier National Park.

The concession contracts are for both Granite Park and Sperry chalets.

The Flathead Beacon reported that the two backcountry lodges turn 100 this summer.

The current concession contract held by Belton Chalets Inc. expires Dec. 31, with the new contract to start Jan. 1, 2015.

Proposals must be filed by May 19 to get the seasonal concession operation of the chalets.

Whitefish resort mulls ban on uphill travel

WHITEFISH, Mont. – The U.S. Forest Service and Whitefish Mountain Resort are considering changes to the resort’s policy of allowing skiers to travel uphill after two people entered an area with active avalanche control.

The Flathead Beacon reported the officials with the federal agency and the resort met Friday to discuss options.

The resort is one of the few allows people to ascend ski runs and ski down for free.

But ski patrollers say a male and female on Feb. 19 disregarded warnings from ski patrollers and descended a closed slope.

Ski patrollers said they had to extinguish explosives in the area that were about to be deployed.
