Local prep athletes get P.O.Y. awards

Four area basketball players were named players of the year for their respective classifications, the Associated Press announced Thursday.

Race Martin of Pullman, who led the Greyhounds to a repeat State 2A championship, was a co-player of the year; Dexter Sienko of St. George’s (2B) was a co-player of the year; Jake Straughan of Colton, who is headed to the University of Idaho and led the Wildcats to a 1B title; and Jenna Moser of Colton, who led the Wildcats to a sixth straight title.

Otiona Gildon of Gonzaga Prep, who led the Bullpups to the State 4A title, was named first team as were Colfax’s Nicole Sheer and Amara Huber, who led the Bulldogs to the 2B title.

There were 13 locals named honorable mention. They are: Cody Benzel (Ferris), David Ungerer (Pullman), Matt Hubbard (Colville), Dylan Hartz (Lind-Ritzville/Sprague), Erik Muelheims (St. George’s), Connor O’Neill (LRS), Dalton Patchen (Colton), Laura Stockton (G-Prep), Madison Hovren (Central Valley), Hailey Higashi (St. George’s), Courtney Gray (Northwest Christian), Zoe Moser (Colton) and Olivia Pakootas (Tekoa-Oakesdale).

All-State games

Two weeks after the Gonzaga Prep girls basketball team captured the State 4A championship, one of its standouts along with its coach were honored at the All-State games.

Point guard Hannah Caudill, who signed with Montana State, was named the Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association 4A player of the year.

In the 4A against 3A game, Caudill scored 13 points to go with four rebounds as the 4A team topped the 3A 82-77.

Caudill’s future college teammate, Delany Junkermier of Mead, had seven points and three rebounds. Mariah Cunningham of Central Valley who is headed to Eastern Washington University had six points, 11 rebounds and two steals. Morgan Hawley of 3A University had two rebounds.

G-Prep coach Mike Arte was named the WSGBCA 4A coach of the year.

• 2A topped 1A 66-63. Katie Vold of Freeman was the lone local player in the game. She had two points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

• 1B hammered 2B 89-47.

Kaelee Reed of Wilbur-Creston led the 1B with 26 points and 13 rebounds. She was named the player of the game.

Reed had support from two other local standouts. Jenna Moser of Colton, who was named the WSGBCA player of the year, had 14 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and seven steals. Moser’s Colton teammate, Jackie Warner, had 18 points and five rebounds Mackenzie Reddish of Rosalia had 10 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals.

For the 2B team, Natalie Hayes of Davenport had eight points and two rebounds.

Football honors

Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos reports more accolades for some of his players.

Senior tight end Chase Blakley, who has signed with Boise State, is listed at No. 2 in Scout’s 2014 Recruiting Yearbook magazine NFL prospects and the No. 1 skill position player in the 2014 recruiting class for the Mountain West Conference. Blakley originally committed with Washington.

Senior quarterback Gunnar Amos, the coach’s son, is listed as the No. 2 quarterback recruit in the Sun Belt Conference and is one of the top five recruits in Idaho’s class. He signed with the Vandals but plans to grayshirt this fall and enroll in January 2015.

• CdA junior linebacker/running back Drew Berger has been offered a scholarship by BSU at inside linebacker.
