Love hurts Lakers with triple-double

NBA: Kevin Love had 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for his second career triple-double and the Minnesota Timberwolves hammered the woeful Los Angeles Lakers 143-107 on Friday night in Minneapolis.

Nikola Pekovic scored 26 points on 9-for-10 shooting in his first game back from an ankle injury and Love hit 3 of 5 3-pointers in just three quarters. Kevin Martin scored 17 points for the Wolves, who led by 19 points in the first quarter, 37 in the second quarter and 40 in the third.

Steve Nash made a surprise appearance for the Lakers, picking up four points and six assists in 14 minutes of just his 12th game of the season.

It was about the only notable development for the Lakers, who allowed the Timberwolves to shoot 67.1 percent.

• Wizards shock Pacers: John Wall scored 20 points, and the Washington Wizards avenged two of their biggest losses of the season, never trailing in a 91-78 win over the cold-shooting, turnover-prone Indiana Pacers in Washington.

• Nets topple Cavs: Paul Pierce scored 17 of his 22 points in a flawless first quarter, and the Brooklyn Nets quickly pulled away in the second on the way to their 12th straight home victory, 108-97 over Cleveland.

Luol Deng and Dion Waiters scored 20 points each for the Cavaliers.

• Magic drop Bobcats: Nikola Vucevic scored 24 points and grabbed 23 rebounds, and Jameer Nelson had five points in overtime as the Orlando Magic edged the visiting Charlotte Bobcats 110-105. Arron Afflalo contributed 17 points for the Magic.

• Blazers tame Bulls: Mo Williams scored 18 points to lead five players in double figures as the Portland Trail Blazers won on the road for a second straight night with a 91-74 rout of the Chicago Bulls.

Damian Lillard added 16 points for the Blazers

• Pelicans quiet Jazz: Tyreke Evans had 22 points and 15 assists, and the short-handed Pelicans overcame the loss of Anthony Davis to extend their winning streak to a season-long five games with a 102-95 victory over visiting Utah.

Anthony Morrow chipped in 20 points for the hosts.

• Spurs top Nuggets: Marco Belinelli scored 27 points, Tim Duncan added 20 and the San Antonio Spurs extended their winning streak to 16 games by beating the Denver Nuggets 133-102.

• Suns burn Knicks: Goran Dragic scored 32 points in 32 minutes and the host Phoenix Suns routed the New York Knicks 112-88 for the their season-high sixth victory in a row.

Miles Plumlee tacked on 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Suns.

Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with 21 points and seven rebounds in defeat.

• Raptors seal playoffs: Amir Johnson scored the winning basket with 7 seconds left, and the Toronto Raptors clinched their first playoff berth in six seasons by beating the visiting Boston Celtics 105-103.

• Heat roll Pistons: LeBron James had 17 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds to help the Miami Heat build a big lead, and then rested in the fourth quarter of a 110-78 victory against the Detroit Pistons.

Five other players also scored in double figures for the Heat.

• Thunder top Kings: Kevin Durant scored 29 points to help Oklahoma City beat the visiting Sacramento Kings 94-81. Russell Westbrook had 18 points and six assists.

• Warriors stop Grizzlies: Stephen Curry scored 33 points, including a tiebreaking 3-pointer, and the Golden State Warriors used a closing run to beat the visiting Memphis Grizzlies 100-93.

Klay Thompson added 14 points for the Warriors.

Stars light up Predators

NHL: The Dallas Stars had seven players score goals in a 7-3 victory over the visiting Nashville Predators. Alex Goligoski assisted on three of the Stars’ goals.

• Oilers sneak by Ducks: Andrew Ference scored at 3:51 of overtime and Ben Scrivens stopped 48 shots and the host Edmonton Oilers pulled off a 4-3 upset of the Anaheim Ducks. Jordan Eberle, Sam Gagner, and Oscar Klefbom added goals for the Oilers.

• Flames handle Rangers: Mike Cammalleri had a goal and an assist to lead the host Calgary Flames to a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers. Joe Colborne, Mark Giordano, and Kevin Westgarth also scored for Calgary.

• Flyers skate by Leafs: Vinny Lecavalier, Scott Hartnell, Claude Giroux and Wayne Simmonds scored goals, leading the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-2 win over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs.

• Penguins shed Jackets: Chris Kunitz and Beau Bennett scored goals 47 seconds apart midway through the third period and Marc-Andre Fleury made 35 saves and the Pittsburgh Penguins clinched a playoff spot with a 2-1 win over the host Columbus Blue Jackets.

• Sens repel Blackhawks: Craig Anderson had 46 saves and Clarke MacArthur had a goal and two assists and the Ottawa Senators beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-3 in Ottawa.

Buckeyes’ Ross bolts school early for Pros

College Basketball: LaQuinton Ross, Ohio State’s leading scorer and rebounder, is giving up his senior season to pursue a pro career. Ross averaged 15.2 points and 5.9 rebounds this season.

• Xavier loses Christon: Sophomore guard Semaj Christon, who led the Musketeers with 17 points per game, will enter the NBA draft.

Mickelson rallies to make cut

Golf: Phil Mickelson made the cut on the number in the Texas Open, blasting out of a greenside water hazard to 5 feet to set up a birdie on the final hole. Mickelson shot a 2-under 70 after opening with a 77 at TPC San Antonio’s AT&T Oaks Course. He was 11 strokes behind leader Steven Bowditch, the Australian who had a 67 to reach 8-under 136. Alex Prugh (Ferris High) shot a one-over 73 and made the cut. He sits at even-par 144.

• Carter leads Kia Classic: Dori Carter shot an 8-under 64 to take a two-stroke lead at the Kia Classic in Carlsbad, Calif. Former WSU Cougar Kim Welch shot 76 and missed the cut.

Nadal, Djokovic advance by default

Miscellany: Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic advanced to the Sony Open final by default. Both advanced when their semifinal opponents (Tomas Berdych and Kei Nishikori) withdrew for health reasons. In women’s doubles, Martina Hingis and Sabine Lisicki beat Cara Black and Sania Mirza 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the final.

• Gophers fire coach: Minnesota has fired women’s basketball coach Pam Borton a day after a loss to South Dakota State in the NIT.

• Mezgec wins stage: Slovenian cyclist Luka Mezgec earned his third stage win of the Volta a Catalunya in Valls, Spain, edging the pack in the final sprint on. Joaquim Rodriguez maintained the overall lead. The race ends Sunday in Barcelona.

• Hanyu wins at worlds: Japanese teenager Yuzuru Hanyu barely topped the free skate to win the world figure skating title in Saitama, Japan. He also won gold in the same event at the Olympics. European champions Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte of Italy finished first in the ice dance short program.

• Man falls at game: Police say a man is in life-threatening condition after falling 10 to 15 yards from the stands at Olympic Stadium in Toronto during an exhibition baseball game between the Blue Jays and Mets.
