Try to forgive Phelps
I usually enjoy reading Leonard Pitts’ columns. The March 24 column was no exception. I don’t always agree with him, but he usually gives me something to think about and often makes me look at things differently.
March 24, I agreed with him wholeheartedly. Fred Phelps did some despicable things, and I believe he was wrong in his beliefs and his actions based on his beliefs. But it seems I have heard it said quite often that we should hate the sin but love the sinner. I think that applies here quite well.
None of us are perfect and none of us are totally bad. I’m sure he loved people close to him, and I’m sure some of them loved him in return. I’m sure he did some good things along with the bad.
So, we should forgive him. Not easy, I know, but we should try.
