CdA, Lake City vie for state spot

Coeur d’Alene and Lake City will have more than neighborhood pride on the line when they collide on the Vikings’ baseball field today at 4 p.m.

At stake will be the Idaho 5A Region I championship and a trip to state.

The latest of their rivalry matches was set up when both won first-round regional games Monday.

Michael Hicks hit three doubles and a triple as top-seeded Coeur d’Alene took care of visiting Post Falls 7-1. Devin Kluss and Nick Nyquist added two hits apiece for the Vikings.

The Timberwolves outlasted the second-seeded Bengals 5-2 in Lewiston. Catcher Reilly Cherry recorded three hits, and Carter Chaffin hit a double and a single in the win.

Post Falls will travel to Lewiston for a loser-out game today, also at 4. That winner will play the CdA-Lake City loser on Thursday for the region’s second state berth.

College golf

Community Colleges of Spokane men and women captured team titles at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Skagit Valley on a saturated Avalon Golf Club course in Burlington, Washington.

Washington State-bound Evan Omelia claimed medalist honors for the third time in four weeks, and sixth in his CCS career, with a 4-over 148 to lead the Sasquatch men to a 609-617 win over Olympic.

Sophomore Cole Lorenzo was sixth at 155 in the men’s seventh tournament title of the spring.

Sophomores Brigid Rypien (North Central, 175) and Kelcie Gardner (Central Valley, 176) were second and third in the CCS women’s 535-581 margin over runner-up Olympic.

College baseball

Junior Robert Pehl singled home the go-ahead run to cap a five-run eighth inning as sixth-ranked Washington completed a comeback from a five-run deficit for an 8-7 nonconference win over Grand Canyon at Husky Ballpark.

UW (33-11-1) trailed GC (25-20) 7-3 going into the bottom of the eighth.

Braden Berry, who started the winning rally with an infield single, hit his first homer in the fourth.

• Six Whitworth Pirates, four of them Greater Spokane League graduates, were named to the Northwest Conference honorable mention list.

Senior relief pitcher Taylor Isadore was joined by five juniors – starting pitchers Spencer Ansett (Ferris) and Cory Mack (Central Valley), catcher Joshua Davis, shortstop Nick Motsinger (University) and designated hitter Thomas Wakem (U-Hi). Davis and Motsinger are repeaters.

Another honorable mention repeater was Willamette junior pitcher Peter Hoffman from Lake City.

NWL baseball

The Spokane Indians will hold tryouts for team mascot from 4-6 p.m. Thursday at Avista Stadium. A resume is required, previous experience is not.
