People: Eva Longoria, DNC raising cash for Latino candidates

From Wire Reports

Actress and activist Eva Longoria and the Democratic National Committee’s finance chief announced on Monday an effort to raise millions for Latino candidates.

Longoria and DNC finance chairman Henry Munoz worked together to raise millions from Latino and Hispanic donors for President Barack Obama’s re-election bid in 2012 and have been laying the groundwork for the Latino Victory Project since then. If the effort and its sister political action committee prove successful, they could again raise tens of millions of dollars, this time dedicated to helping Latino candidates.

“People keep talking about the power of the Latino vote. But the truth is that (2012) was just the tip of the iceberg,” Longoria told the Associated Press on Monday. “We are not tapping into the full potential yet of the Latino community.”

Singer McCreery robbed in home

Country music singer Scotty McCreery was the victim of an early morning home invasion near the campus of North Carolina State University, where he is a student.

Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said officers were called shortly before 2 a.m. Monday to an apartment about a mile from campus. People at the apartment told police that three suspects armed with guns robbed them of wallets, cash and electronic items. Police said the 20-year-old McCreery was at the apartment visiting friends. No one was injured.

A native of nearby Garner, McCreery won TV’s “American Idol” in 2011. He was named best new artist at the Academy of Country Music Awards the next year.

Actress Winter will live with sister

“Modern Family” actress Ariel Winter will keep living with her adult sister after an agreement was reached Monday with the mother of Winter in a long-running guardianship dispute. The agreement was reached just before a trial was set to begin on who would care for the 16-year-old actress.

Winter’s mother Chrisoula Workman agreed to drop her objections to the guardianship if her daughter could watch a video montage of family photos before court adjourned.

Superior Court Judge Daniel Murphy agreed, and Winter and her sister Shanelle Gray sat in court and dabbed their eyes with tissues as photos of their childhood played. Winter left court without speaking, but Murphy said it would be up to her to decide whether she would visit with her mother.

Winter has been living with Gray since 2012, when a temporary guardianship was established amid allegations that Workman was subjecting her daughter to physical and emotional abuse.
