Cardinals softball beaten

Baylee Reeves fired a complete-game five-hitter Thursday to lead the Salt Lake Bruins to a 4-1 victory over the North Idaho Cardinals in a NHJCAA Region 18 softball game at Twin Falls, Idaho.

Madison Anthony belted a solo home run to account for the Cardinals’ only run.

North Idaho (36-21) will play Southern Utah (38-19) in a loser-out game this morning at 8:30 a.m. If the Cardinals win they will play Western Nevada (14-44) at 1:30 p.m.

• Whitney Jones stroked a two-run, go-ahead single in the top of the third inning and the eighth-ranked Washington Huskies (31-13, 11-9) held off the California Golden Bears (23-27, 4-16) 4-3 in the opener of a three-game Pac-12 series in Berkeley, California.

Golf

The Gonzaga Bulldogs women shot an opening-round 317 on Thursday and are tied for 21st place at the NCAA West Regional at Tumble Creek at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Wash.

Freshman Ciera Min carded a 6-over-par 78 to pace Gonzaga. Teammate Han Wu shot a 79.

Southern Cal opened with a 288 and leads the host Washington Huskies by four strokes.

There are two rounds left, with the top eight teams advancing to the NCAA finals.

Women’s basketball

Washington State’s women’s basketball team added its seventh recruit for next year when it landed a 6-foot-5 center from Romania.

Bianca Blanaru, of Timisoara, Romania, has agreed to join the Cougars as a freshman next season. Blanaru had been committed to play for Arkansas, but she was released from that agreement following a coaching change.

College football

The Whitworth Pirates football team will complete its first spring practices under new coach Rod Sandberg with an event Saturday at the Pine Bowl.

The NCAA does not allow Division III teams to practice with pads. Instead of a scrimage, Sandberg will have his team stage competition between position groups in addition to some drills and contests between 11 a.m. and noon.

Parents and fans are invited. A lunch will be provided after the drills.

Junior hockey

The Spokane Chiefs traded 17-year-old goaltender Trevor Martin to the Saskatoon Blades for a conditional seventh-round pick in next year’s draft.

Martin played in eight games for the Whitecourt Wolverines of the AJHL last season. He posted a 3-3-1 record.
