A community event Saturday at Medical Lake offers a chance for children and adults to learn about the fish in the lake – and how to catch them – and the birds and plants around it.

Plus, free hot dogs for everybody.

The Love Your Lake event, put on by the Medical Lake Library, offers hands-on learning, guided hikes and other activities designed to bring community and lake together. Residents are invited to participate in some or all of the activities.

“We wanted to do something for the community, offer a program outside our library walls,” librarian Christie Onzay said.

The schedule packs in opportunities to cast a fly or spot wildflowers in bloom.

At noon, a biologist from the Department of Fish and Wildlife will lead a presentation about fish in the lake and offer tips on catching them.

Then, in sessions starting at 1 and 2 p.m., members of the Spokane Fly Fishers will let children and adults try casting – “not in the lake, but on a field, so we don’t have to worry about fishing licenses,” Onzay said.

Starting at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. volunteers from the Spokane Audubon Society will lead a trail walk and talk about the birds and flowers found along the way.

Craft activities for children will be ongoing.

Hot dogs and chips will be served from 1 to 3 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring their own water bottles, although the first 100 who show up will get free ones.
