Shadle to play for 3A crown

Jaya Allen used her bat and her arm to get Shadle Park into the District 3A championship game with a 7-2 victory over Mt. Spokane on Monday at Mead.

Allen hit a grand slam in the first inning to highlight a 2-for-2 game with five RBIs and struck out six as the Highlanders secured a spot in the regionals and advanced to Thursday’s 5 p.m. district title game against top-seeded University at Whitworth.

Mt. Spokane is the No. 3 seed and will play No. 4 North Central on Wednesday at 5 at Whitworth in a seeding game.

Prep tennis

All four top seeds, led by No. 1 Kyle Fager of Lewis and Clark advanced to today’s boys 4A District quarterfinals.

The other top seeds are No. 2 Josiah Hopkins of Mead, No. 3 Jacob Connant of Central Valley and No. 4 Alec Siok of Ferris.

Doubles are also through to the quarterfinals.

• Gonzaga Prep and Central Valley each advanced three singles players into today’s quarterfinals of the 4A girls at Hart Field.

In doubles, CV, Mead and Lewis and Clark each had two teams advance.

• No. 1 seed Kyle Smithgall of University defeated Brentyn Jones of Mt. Spokane 6-0, 6-3 to advance to today’s boys quarters. In doubles, No. 1 Sam Luge and Kramer Erb from Mt. Spokane had a bye into the quarters.

• The top three singles seeds, two of them from Shadle Park, advanced to day two of the girls 3A District at University.

No. 1 Kayla Uplinger of Mt. Spokane, Nos. 2 and 3 Audra Spargo and Daniela Giacomelli, both of Shadle, all recorded straight-set wins in the second round.

College golf

Community Colleges of Spokane men and women placed second in the Southwest Oregon Invitational at Brandon, Oregon.

The CCS men claimed the NWAACC regular-season championship with their runner-up finish to the host school after three tournament wins.

CCS sophomore Evan Omelia finished in a three-way tie for first but had to settle for a tie for second after a one-hole playoff.

Kelcie Gardner (Central Valley) of CCS was second at 174 and Brigid Rypien (North Central) fourth at 180 as the Sasquatch women lost to Columbia Basin 516-536.
